From 15 April to 30 June, a tree felling ban period will be in force in Riga. During this time, the felling of trees growing outside forests is prohibited. Such a ban applies throughout Latvia, the Riga City Council Communication Department reported.
The tree felling ban period has been established to protect greenery in urban areas during the initial stage of the vegetation period – the budding phase – as well as to protect birds nesting within them.
Felling trees during this time is permitted only in cases where trees are deemed dangerous to the public.
The ban does not apply to the felling of fruit trees and trees with a stump diameter of less than 20 centimetres, nor to trees outside urban areas in locations where the growing of trees is prohibited according to regulations on protection zones, land drainage, motorways, and railways.
