21 March – International Day of Forests

The International Day of Forests was established in 2012 by a United Nations General Assembly resolution. Although the commemorative day is relatively new, its roots date back to 1971, when the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN introduced World Forestry Day, as well as the more recent establishment of Forest Day (2007) by the Center for International Forestry Research. Currently, neither of these events takes place, but they have been replaced by a new one – the International Day of Forests. Its goal is to increase public awareness of the importance of forests and the opportunities they provide for meeting the needs of present and future generations.

This year's theme is “Forests and climate change”; it highlights the forestry sector's solutions for tackling climate change issues and establishes a link between forests and sustainable development. Unfortunately, despite the ecological, economic and social benefits that forests provide to us, as humans, global deforestation continues to progress at an alarming rate – 13 million hectares of forest are destroyed every year, leaving irreparable consequences for the climate.
